Our Founder and President, Melanie Jones, is a busy boss lady. The number of hats she wears in the course of a day is pretty amazing. We cornered her for a little Q&A to learn more about her love of marketing, technology, and coffee.

WHAT IS YOUR ROLE AT MARKETING INTERFACE?

Um, everything. As President of a small company, I am the IT department, the accounting department, the sales department, the business development department, the customer support department, and, since Nicole joined our team, the HR department. We even joke that I’m the CISO for Marketing Interface!

In addition to working with our clients, the favorite part of my job is strategy and growth planning for Marketing Interface. I am constantly revisiting our targets and whether we’re on track with our planning. The MBA in me loves the spreadsheet modeling.

WHAT EXCITES YOU ABOUT MARKETING TECHNOLOGY (MARTECH)?

So. Many. Things.

I love helping people and I believe in ambition and setting goals. My attraction to marketing and why I like being on the “agency side” is that I get to help my clients grow their businesses and achieve their goals. What I love about martech is that it gives organizations in every industry and sector – regardless of size and budget – tools that allow us to do marketing better. Sure, huge corporations have fancy tools that not everyone can afford (by the way, not everybody needs them), but martech has “democratized” good marketing.

I hate mediocrity. Every single day and hour, martech gives us the ability to see where we’re underperforming and the opportunity to correct our course.

I am energized and inspired when surrounded by people who solve problems in innovative ways. So, I love getting to help my clients, but I also love all of the amazing ideas around which martech vendors have created companies dedicated to solving an insane number of marketing challenges.

MARKETING INTERFACE BELIEVES IN “TAKING THE FLUFF OUT OF MARKETING.” WHAT DOES THAT MEAN TO YOU?

Taking the fluff out of marketing means that everything we do has a tangible impact on the business and moves the organization closer to its goals, whether that is raising money from an investor, generating more cash flow, operating more sustainably, etc.

It doesn’t mean that you get to skip having a social presence or that developing your brand isn’t important. It’s that everything related to marketing gets rigorously questioned, prioritized, planned, and executed with discipline.

Marketing is inherently a function that should always be trying new ideas. We can’t just repeat what worked before because what was done before will eventually stop working. When trying becomes testing, and testing includes collecting quantitative and qualitative data that gets analyzed, marketing is not fluffy.

Trying something just because you heard that you should is fluffy. Making a pointless video or publishing a white paper without a strategic message, is fluffy. Don’t waste your time or money if you can’t explain the purpose, don’t have time to think it through, or you aren’t sure if you’re following best practices.

WHAT ARE THE 3 APPS ON YOUR PHONE YOU COULDN’T LIVE WITHOUT?

Picking only 3 is nearly impossible! I am constantly updating and adding phone apps and Chrome extensions. It’s kind of a problem. Gun to my head, and ruling out all the social apps I must have for work, I would have to go with:

  • I was one of the super-devastated people when Mailbox announced it was closing. So, I did some research on the best mail apps for iPhone and heard amazing things about the recently updated Outlook for iPhone. It is amazing!
  • Door Dash. For everyone’s safety, not only my own, I rarely cook. Thank goodness I’m lucky enough to know lots of people who love to cook and share their food! However, I love the UI/UX of Door Dash. It’s so easy to use and the people are friendly. I love that they save the delivery instructions so I don’t have to spell it out each time. I also find it costs less than Favor.
  • Two Dots. Everyone needs an addictive phone game, and this is my long-time favorite!

HOW DO YOU TAKE YOUR COFFEE?

Black, but I try to drink more tea than coffee.

WHEN YOU AREN’T GLUED TO YOUR MAC, WHERE CAN WE FIND YOU?

Hopefully traveling! If I’m in town, you will likely find me walking at Memorial Park (I hate running!), at one of Houston’s amazing restaurants or bars, or catching up with friends and family. I’ve also started regularly attending shows at the Houston Ballet. It’s so much fun to do something different every once in a while. I may also be guilty of the occasional Netflix and Chill session.
